Kitchen Series: Start here
When we think about healthy kitchens, we often think about ingredients, but the cookware and kitchen products we use daily matter just as much. The kitchen is more than a functional space; it holds both our routines and cherished memories.
Many of our favorite childhood memories take place in our grandparents’ kitchen. Weekends started with Mom squeezing fresh oranges, Grandma giving us raw honey, and Grandpa bringing warm fresh bread, each a simple act of care.
Moments like these remind us that the kitchen has always been a place where we care for the people we love. Today, that care extends to the products we use, which inspired us to create this section.
The Kitchen Series offers simple ways to refresh your kitchen, whether you’re starting out or already exploring low-tox upgrades. We begin with our approach and practical first steps.
Quick Kitchen Audit
Before we dive into each category, let’s get a clear picture of what’s in your kitchen.
What do you use to cook every day?
Which items come into contact with hot food or drinks?
How many cleaning products do you use regularly?
What kind of water do you drink and cook with?
Our Approach
Updating our kitchens to be lower-tox has been a long-term project that began with small swaps, research and testing products over time. The Kitchen Series is based on three questions that guide us in deciding which kitchen items matter most when making changes:
How often is the product used?
Is it exposed to heat through food or water or cooking?
Will it come into contact with food or drinks?
We know getting started can feel overwhelming because there are so many products in our kitchen and changing everything isn’t possible for most people. That’s why we’re taking it one step at a time and focusing on four areas.
We will be releasing a new section of the four-part Kitchen Series every few weeks.
In each post we will share:
Why we picked this category
Key ingredients and materials to know about
Real-life swaps
Simple hacks
Sometimes the best swap isn’t a new product at all. With that in mind, we’re starting with one of the most used items in the kitchen.
